The Dissident Library: Soviet Samizdat: Imagining a New Society
In the next seminar in the series The Dissident Library we will discuss Ann Komaromi’s (University of Toronto) recently published book Soviet Samizdat. Imagining a New Society. The concept of the “samizdat publics” which draws attention to the various public circles that have formed around Samizdat will be the starting point of our talk. Further discussion topics include: the notions of new society, space and (historical) time imagined in these circles; the “multiple modernities” (Taylor) of late Soviet society; the vertical and the horizontal as models for the relation of samizdat to the Soviet regime; speaking truth in public; and Habermas’s approach to the study of Samizdat.
