Emotion and Motion
Central to the project was the question of emotionality and physicality in the context of cultural practices, techniques, and habitualizations. Analysis of the movements of the body in relation to their inherent emotionality allows the concept of an emotional habitus to be developed. This, in turn, is indescribable without a relationship to a traditional or unusual habitat. The relationship between habitus and habitat situates itself in each case in the tension between the position to the outside world on the one hand, and perpetuated situatedness and embeddedness in a world without inside and outside on the other hand. To describe it requires a phenomenological access that spans both questions of subjectivity and identity, including those of the enactive.
The project approached these issues in dealing with scientific knowledge and cultural-historical representations of emotions. In particular, artistic and literary productions articulate the relationship between inside/outside as a reciprocal conditioning and explore emotions in terms of visuality, musicality, and physicality. Thereby the movement of the body is registered as a constitutive intrinsic component or as an index. Accordingly, emotions were summed up in relation to temporalities and topographies of “between.” Emotionality was not only seen as an internally-subjective event, but also as a bodily experience that carries sense and meaning.
The project cooperated with the Berlin School of Mind and Brain and the Kolleg-Forschergruppe Bildakt und Verkörperung of Humboldt Universität Berlin. Together they formed the discussion group Habitus in Habitat.The specific questions of the project Emotion and Motion were also addressed by three interdisciplinary conferences of a conference series of the same name, which dealt with Emotion and Motion, Other Sides of Cognition, Synaesthesia and Kinaesthetics.
