In the early modern period, the events of war are prominently imagined in the metaphor of the theater (theatrum belli) which promises an orderly presentability of combat and battles. While this finding is understandable against the background of baroque metaphors of the theater, it becomes quite surprising when looking at the presence of war in the theatrical and dramatic tradition. After all, the theater already faces various obstacles when it comes to the technical side of staging war. It is usually kept from the audience’s view. However, with the help of indirect enactment techniques such as the teichoscopy or the messenger’s report, dramatic texts as well as the theater reflect even more consistently on the correlation between an aesthetic and a political view on war. This volume explores this interplay within the historical process.
