Attributing Artworks: The Display of Evidence in Art History

Attributing artworks to painters and sculptors is a major activity in art history and in museum life. It is a complex activity, based upon the recognition of common elements, but also on trusting the "eye" of the learned viewer, an eye that cannot be acquired by formal training (but more likely by early familiarity with art). The eye is most of the time the connoisseur's eye, an ambivalent character in art history. How can a single individual's visual certainty be considered the criterion of evidence? Changes in the attribution of masterpieces can lead to enormous variations of value and to a partial rewriting of art history. It can either create or destroy the reputation of attributers. Indulgent or false attributions are matters of deontological debates. But attribution is also a political game, in that it focuses attention on national characters or schools in painting, sometimes colonizing or excluding other traditions. Drawing first on historical material, and especially on disputed cases in French art history (e.g. the case of the "Primitifs français" at the turn of the 20th century), then making more general remarks concerning the attributing processes, it is possible to identify the main steps in attribution as well as the different ways of displaying evidence in highly conjectural matters.

Zur Person
Jean-Louis Fabiani, 1951 in Algiers geboren, gehört seit 1991 der Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) an, seit 1996 als Directeur d’études. Von 1988–91 war er als Beauftragter für korsische Kultur am französischen Kulturministerium tätig. Fabianis Studien, die sich sowohl der Philosophie, als auch Umweltfragen und den Formen kultureller Praxen widmen, lassen sich im Kern einer historischen Soziologie des Wissens zuordnen. Gastprofessuren führten ihn u.a. an das Soziologie-Department der Universität von Chicago. Gegenwärtig ist Fabiani als Fellow am Berliner Wissenschaftskolleg zu Gast.
