[Ilse Aichinger’s Poetry. The Printed Work and the Manuscripts]

Ilse Aichinger’s poetry is part of the postulated rather than the actual literary canon: Almost a hundred of the poems and poetry sketches kept in the German Literature Archive in Marbach remain unpublished, and there has so far been no  methodologically substantiated general study for this award-winning body of work.
This volume features analyses of all the printed and unprinted poems and prose, drafts, as well as preliminary texts. A combination of quantitative evaluation methods and precise textual analysis, as well as a breakdown of preliminary stages and drafts according to text-genetic aspects, reveals characteristics and stages of development, as well as previously unseen text references. Furthermore, these analyses uncover selection processes that have influenced both the working process and publication policy. Text structure and text control highlight the interrelated poetic principles that characterize this lyrical work .
Additional research into Günter Eich’s prose poems and the parallels to Paul Celan’s handling of biographical traces situate Aichinger’s work in his time and enable new research approaches into the history of poetry after 1945.
