Laura Otis: Dialogical Epistemology. Cognitive Styles and Literary Creativity

Interviews with scientists, poets, literary scholars, and other creative professionals indicate that people differ greatly in their reading experiences, especially in the formation of visual mental images. Comparisons of creative individuals’ insights with the results of cognitive neuroscience experiments can yield hybrid knowledge about what it means to read, write, and interpret literature.

Laura Otis ist Professorin und Direktorin der Graduate Studies am Department of English der Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Vor ihrer Karriere als Literaturwissenschaftlerin (Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, Cornell University, 1991) studierte sie Molekulare Biophysik, Biochemie und Neurowissenschaften in Yale und an der UC San Francisco. Im Jahr 2000 erhielt sie in den USA eines der renommierten MacArthur Fellowships. Zu ihren aktuellen Forschungsschwerpunkten gehören Fragen des Gedächtnisses, der Identitätsbildung und Kommunikationstechniken. Dabei untersucht sie insbesondere die Überschneidungen von Literatur und Wissenschaft. Berlin kennt sie u.a. von Aufenthalten am Max-Planck-Institut für Wissenschaftsgeschichte; im Sommer 2013 ist sie Gastwissenschaftlerin am ZfL.
