Über Zeugen
Szenarien von Zeugenschaft und ihre Akteure
[Convincing Witnesses: Scenarios of Witnessing and their Actors]

Wilhelm Fink Verlag, München 2017, 305 pages
ISBN: 978-3-7705-5732-5

The witness plays a central role in the scenario of establishing truth. Witnesses are also key to negotiating and managing findings and knowledge in a legal context. At the same time, the knowledge generated by witnessing has always had a contested status. A witness always needs accreditation, recognition and approval in order to be seen as valid.

The essays in this book discuss different types and forms of testimonial knowledge, combining historical and theoretical perspectives. They illuminate the ways in which this particular type of knowledge relies on ethical, political, social, artistic, and religious elements. Practices and scenarios of witnessing are the principle focus of the book because these moments of action provide constellations in which the dynamics that determine the credibility of a witness are determined. They are the foundation upon which the very option of establishing and institutionalizing testimonial knowledge resides.
