Since the early 2010s, Affective Computing develops digital technologies to automatically detect human emotions. This “emotion detection” is based on the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), a classification system for emotions that promises to decode emotions by analyzing the movement of facial muscles. However, FACS conveys a paradigm of emotions that combines unsolved issues from the prehistory of the study of emotions.
This book explores the continuous effects of these issues in computer-based depression research and autism therapy that make use of Affective Computing methods. It asks how, despite these ambiguities, the encoding system develops a powerful productivity.
