Butler exemplifies what global intellectualism and public discourse can mean today – for better or for worse. In some circles, the author of Gender Trouble is a star with glamour status and fans; in others, she is a demonised and ridiculed figure. The spring issue of the Zeitschrift für Ideengeschichte (Journal of the History of Ideas) traces the trouble and the power of a way of thinking that draws its energy from contradictions.
