The Dissident Library: Memorial Practices of the Soviet Underground

The next seminar of The Dissident Library will be devoted to a discussion of the recently published volume (Counter-)Archive: Memorial Practices of the Soviet Underground, the first major study to examine the archival and memorial practices of Soviet unofficial culture. Contrary to existing scholarship, it argues that Soviet unofficial culture was not only the object of repression itself, but also a platform, or rather a whole range of platforms for the maintenance, systematization and study of neglected or forbidden memory. Against the background of archival theories and memory studies, the authors encourage a new perspective on the Soviet underground as a unique medium for alternative interpretations of history and culture.
The following questions are suggested for the discussion:
- How did Soviet unofficial culture (de-)construct state-run social memory by collecting, archiving and memorizing (semi-)tabooed culture of the past and present?
- How did the creation of (counter-)archives contribute to the cultural resistance in the Soviet Union?
- What do these acts of memorial agency mean for the future perception of Soviet unofficial culture?
- How do performative archival practices of the Soviet counter-culture influence recent artistic practices?
We invite the authors of the collection and all those interested to join us for a conversation with Klavdia Smola (Technische Universität Dresden) and Ilya Kukulin (Stanford University) and discuss cases known to us from the perspective introduced by their volume.

Следующий семинар Библиотеки инакомыслия будет посвящен обсуждению недавно вышедшего тома (Контр-)Архив: Мемориальные практики советского андеграунда – первого масштабного исследования, в котором рассматриваются архивные и мемориальные практики советской неофициальной культуры. Авторы показывают, что советская неофициальная культура была не только объектом репрессий, но и платформой или, скорее, целым рядом платформ для поддержания, систематизации и изучения забытой или запрещенной памяти. Апеллируя к архивным теориям и исследованиям памяти, авторы призывают по-новому взглянуть на советский андеграунд как на уникальную среду для альтернативных интерпретаций истории и культуры.
Для обсуждения предлагаются следующие вопросы:
- Как советская неофициальная культура (де)конструировала социальную память, собирая, архивируя и запоминая (полу)табуированную культуру прошлого и настоящего?
- Как создание (контр)архивов способствовало культурному сопротивлению в Советском Союзе?
- Что означают эти мемориальные практики для будущего восприятия советской неофициальной культуры?
- Как перформативные архивные практики советской контркультуры влияют на современные художественные практики?
Мы приглашаем авторов сборника и всех желающих присоединиться к беседе с Клавдией Смола (Технический университет Дрездена) и Ильей Кукулиным (Стэнфордский университет) и обсудить известные нам случаи с точки зрения оптики, предложенной в их книге.
