Riddles shape narratives across genres and media, from classic detective fiction to mystery films and video games. The inaugural conference of the DFG network “The Allure of the Riddle” examines how riddles generate suspense in popular forms while simultaneously reflecting on the very processes of narrativization. Bringing together perspectives from literary, film, and game studies, the conference explores how riddles negotiate aesthetic, ethical, and epistemological questions and reveal genre- and media-specific codes. By foregrounding their dialogical structures, the contributions highlight the riddle as a dynamic site of interpretation and audience engagement.
