The Dissident Library: The Refusenik Movement and the Rise of Jewish Studies in the Late Soviet Union

The next seminar of The Dissident Library will focus on two books published over the past year: A Time to Sow. Refusenik Life in Leningrad, 1979–1989 by Michael Beizer and Ann Komaromi, and Zwischen Ausreisebewegung und Akademie: Judaistik in der späten Sowjetunion by Ulrike Huhn. Although they emphasize different aspects, both books examine the Refusenik movement—Jews who sought to emigrate from the USSR to Israel and spent many years in a state of “refusal” after being denied an exit visa, facing work and study restrictions associated with their attempts to emigrate.
Michael Beizer, drawing on his own experience as a Refusenik in Leningrad, proposes viewing the activists’ engagement with Jewish history, ethnography, and related fields in the context of their struggle to emigrate and the protracted period of refusal. Michael Beizer offers a detailed account of the cultural environment in which Refuseniks lived, including a chapter on Jewish Studies—the very topic to which Ulrike Huhn’s entire book is dedicated. Her book examines the motivation, networks, and scope of action of young Jewish intellectuals in the late Soviet Union and follows her research and travels to Crimea and the former shtetls in the Baltic states, Ukraine, Belarus, Moscow, and Leningrad Ann Komaromi situates the Jewish movement alongside other unofficial movements, considering it both within the broader Soviet context and within the framework of Western reception and international politics, as well as exploring the construction of a Russian Jewish identity and comparing it with its pre-revolutionary counterpart.

Refusenik Life in Leningrad, 1979–1989 Михаэля Бейзера и Энн Комароми и Zwischen Ausreisebewegung und Akademie: Judaistik in der späten Sowjetunion Ульрике Хун.
