When looking at virtual realities in early modern theater, we must revise our concepts of virtuality and presence as shaped by the digital age. In the field of Romance cultures, multiple understandings of presence and virtuality have a long and controversial history. An examination of the prehistory of enhanced experiences of reality in the theater explores the integration of visualization techniques in intertwined stories and multilayered narratives of the effective virtual. Here, plural histories of presence are acted out in diverse media and epistemic contexts of production.
