Zum Vortrag
Empirical research shows that gesture
and facial expression are important elements already at work in the
primary intersubjectivity of early infancy. They not only facilitate
emotional communication, they reference pragmatic and social contexts
and generate meaning. These elements do not disappear with maturity, but
continue to play their role in our understanding of others. With the
acquisition of language, narrative competence comes to play a similar
role and allows for a more nuanced and sophisticated form of
understanding. Considerations about the roles of gesture and narrative
provide support for the critique of standard theory-of-mind approaches
to social cognition.
