The Dissident Library: The Abuse of Psychiatry

Venue: online via Zoom
Organized by Olga Rosenblum
Research project(s): Soviet Dissidence and the Public

The next seminar in the series The Dissident Library will focus on punitive psychiatry, a topic inextricably linked to, but somewhat detached from, the history of and research on Soviet dissidence. We will discuss the emergence of research into psychiatric abuse in the Soviet Union with Peter Reddaway and Robert van Voren, two pioneers of this research, who will also talk about their first publications as well as their international reception. Robert van Voren suggested the following topics for the discussion: the number of dissidents who became victims; reasons for sending a dissident to either a labor camp or to a psychiatric hospital; ways/criteria by which to determine a dissident’s duration of stay in a psychiatric hospital; the level of authority required to make such decisions.

The seminar will also examine issues of psychiatry in literature. Rebecca Reich, author of a recently published monograph, suggested the following overarching topics of discussion: ideas of reality and normality in psychiatry and literature; psychiatric ideas about literature; literary aspects of diagnostic practice; the attitude of dissidents towards psychiatry; the pathologizing of Soviet reality; literary reactions to the abuse of psychiatry.

The event is part of The Dissident Library, a series of online seminars discussing scientific publications on the Soviet dissident movement directed and organized by Olga Rosenblum.
